Celebration!!!

Thom got home about midnight from his trip to Nairobi and after a long walk we had just gone to bed and fallen asleep when he jumped up and said, the phone’s ringing.  Now, you know how those middle-of-the-night phone calls strike fear in your heart.  However, this time it was good news, fantastic news.  The director of FSRP had called to say that the challenger Sata had won the election. See this and this.  In an instant the mood of the country switched from dread to jubilation!

It is truly a testament to the Zambian people that they were able to pull off a free and fair election, and that the people could see their voices heard, especially amidst a continent rife with vote rigging and civil wars.  And, just as importantly, kudos to the outgoing president for conceding graciously and contributing his huge part to the democratic process.

You can’t imagine the relief and joy spreading throughout Zambia tonight!  Gunfire is going off but this time it’s in celebration.
