More Hot Water from Compost — Rotating Trash Cans

I’m so fascinated by these compost hot water heaters that I’ve researched them more thoroughly.  Having felt first-hand the effects of such an easy project I wanted to see what others were doing.

The best idea I saw (read: the one needing the least work) was the rotating trash can hot water compost heaters, found here.  Here’s a photo from their website of what they recommend:

What I like about how they did it was:

  1. The compost was completely contained inside trash cans (read: not messy).
  2. The hose or rubber pipe was pre-coiled around a PVC pipe with couplings, meaning that one could just pull the whole unit out and place it in another trash can in 5 seconds (instead of having to hand-coil in a compost pile each time).
  3. If you use a trash can with wheels, then you can just roll your completed compost to the garden, instead of having to shovel it into something and then move it.

All around, a time-saving method of hot water heating compost!
