A Movie Star?

When we travel abroad we sometimes get the red carpet treatment.  Restaurant servers comp us drinks and food.  People motion for us to cut in line ahead of them.  Flight attendants bring us extra bottles of wine.  People stand and point and then whisper.

Originally we thought it was due to our sparkling good looks (but then caught glimpses of ourselves in the mirror) or our dazzling personalities (but then realized these people obviously have never spoken to us).  Our youngest Kevin figured it out.  Thom is being confused with Terry O’Quinn, a famous actor of the television show “Lost” fame.  Check out these photos below.  Which one is Thom?

Or, which one of these is Thom?

Last May in the West Indies (Dominica) the breakfast buffet server at our hotel kept giggling whenever Thom came up for a refill.  He finally said, “How are you today?” She replied, “Great! I can’t believe I’m talking to you in person!”  Thom nodded and came back to the table incredibly confused.  When we told Kevin the story he immediately googled O’Quinn and the mystery was solved.  (As an interesting aside, O’Quinn is originally from Michigan!)

Of course, I know it’s obvious to you and me which one is which – Thom is much younger and better looking – but I can see how people might be confused when they see him from a distance.

    Hi Kimm,
I actually have worked with Terry O’Quinn’s brothers Tom and Roger. We were counselors together at Mystic Lake YMCA camp. They are from Newberry Michigan in the UP. Never met Terry, but his last name is actually Quinn, not O’Quinn (stage name). Hope you are well! Dennis
